Student Struggling with Depression Learns Why He Matters

In March, 2019, three high schools in Tucson, AZ, hosted a joint Outreach Week from March 4-8 with the theme “What Even Matters?” Today, we are excited to share about Caleb*, a rising junior at Tanque Verde High School (TVHS) and one of the 900 students that attended the rally.

Caleb was invited to the “What Even Matters” Outreach Week by his friend Ryan. Also a rising junior, Ryan has been a part of TVHS’s Bible club since his freshman year. Knowing that his friend struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide, Ryan hoped he would attend the rally.

“I was hoping that he would come and understand why he matters,” said Ryan. “I originally got the idea from him, because he talked to me about how he felt he didn't matter when he was struggling at one point. So I prayed about it for a long time and [realized] the Outreach Week was a great way to show him why he did matter.”

Praise God, Caleb showed up!

“Through the [Outreach] Week, I saw him open up to me in ways that I've never seen him open up to anybody. He talked to me about his struggles in life and what he was going through. Throughout the whole year he always came to me with the struggles in his life because he knew that I cared about him enough to listen and try to help.”

As they head into their junior year of high school, Ryan continues to walk with Caleb through the struggles he faces. Please pray for them, that Caleb would come to know salvation through Jesus Christ and that Ryan would be a faithful friend and witness each step of the way.
